The RIIHAN208E Perform Dogging course gives you the practical skills and knowledge required to plan dogging activities, prepare lifting equipment and safely move loads in mining, civil construction and other site-based workplaces.

Dogging is a safety-critical role. It involves selecting the correct lifting gear, attaching loads securely and directing crane or plant operators when they cannot clearly see the load. This nationally recognised unit helps you develop the confidence, awareness and communication skills needed to support safe and efficient lifting operations.

What You’ll Learn

This practical, hands-on course will teach you how to:

• Plan and prepare for dogging operations
• Interpret work instructions, lift requirements and site procedures
• Identify hazards and apply effective risk controls
• Calculate basic load weights and dimensions
• Identify load characteristics and centres of gravity
• Select suitable slings, shackles and lifting equipment
• Inspect lifting gear and identify faults or damage
• Apply appropriate slinging methods
• Secure different types of loads correctly
• Direct load movements using recognised communication methods
• Use hand signals, radios and other workplace communication systems
• Monitor loads throughout lifting and positioning activities
• Respond to changing conditions, hazards and equipment issues
• Inspect, clean and store dogging equipment after use

Participants must demonstrate dogging activities on at least two occasions, including preparing a dogging plan, selecting equipment and safely moving loads.
