Working at heights is part of the job across mining, construction, maintenance and heavy industry but there is no room for shortcuts.

The RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights course gives you the practical skills and essential safety knowledge needed to identify hazards, use fall protection equipment and complete work at height safely and confidently.

This nationally recognised course is designed for workers who may be required to work on roofs, platforms, scaffolds, structures, elevated equipment or any location where there is a risk of falling.

What You’ll Learn

This practical, hands on course will teach you how to:

  • Plan and prepare for work at height
  • Identify fall hazards and assess workplace risks
  • Interpret work instructions, procedures and safety documents
  • Select, inspect and correctly fit personal protective equipment
  • Use harnesses, lanyards and fall protection systems
  • Identify suitable anchor points
  • Establish barricades and exclusion zones
  • Safely access and move around elevated work areas
  • Handle tools and materials while working at height
  • Monitor changing workplace conditions
  • Respond to hazards, equipment issues and emergencies
  • Clean, inspect and store equipment correctly

Participants must demonstrate the ability to work safely at heights on at least two occasions, including correctly fitting, adjusting and anchoring fall-protection equipment.

As this unit is delivered on your site, students are required to wear their site PPE.

UNITS OF COMPETENCY

The unit is comprised of 1 unit of competency. All unit requirements must be satisfactorily completed to be deemed Competent.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants will learn to identify work requirements, assess and control risks associated with working at heights, select and inspect appropriate equipment, and apply safe work methods to undertake tasks at elevated positions. The training emphasizes adherence to Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations and the implementation of effective fall protection systems to prevent incidents.

Students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Provide Australian legal photo identification for assessment purposes
  • Ability to implement discretionary judgment and make decisions under supervision
CLASS BASED COURSE STRUCTURE

This program will be delivered  face-to-face, with classroom-based learning and assessment.

This unit is made up of:

Face-to-face Classroom-Based Learning

Students are required to attend face-to-face classroom-based training sessions.

The face-to-face classroom-based component of this program is specifically designed to address the learning needs of the student cohort, promoting active participation and skill development through various engaging training techniques, including:

  • Group-Based Summary and Practical Preparation: These sessions review key concepts from the self-directed learning phase, preparing students for hands-on practice.
  • Group Discussions and Scenarios: Collaborative discussions and scenario-based learning foster critical thinking and application of theoretical knowledge in a practical context.
  • Practical Exercises and Demonstrations: These activities are designed to demonstrate skill acquisition and reinforce theoretical knowledge through hands-on practice.

Simulated Work / Industry Environment

  • Components of this training program will be delivered and assessed in a simulated environment at the client’s premises.
CLASS BASED COURSE DURATION

The program is typically delivered over 8 hours (1 day) and can be adapted to suit individual student needs and business requirements.

The program includes:

  • Face-to-face classroom sessions
  • 6 hours theory and practical learning activities
  • 2 hours theory and practical assessments in a real-life simulated environment

The actual duration will vary based on each student’s prior knowledge, skill level, and active participation. Additional learning support is available to ensure students are well-prepared for assessment activities.

SKILLS RECOGNITION

Credit Transfer is available for unit of competency RIIWHS204E Work safely at heights. Credit Transfer is a process that grants credit for Units of Competency previously achieved through formal and accredited training. To obtain Credit Transfer for individual units of competency that have been completed previously, students must provide the enrolling officer with official transcripts for Units of Competency achieved within a nationally recognised qualification at the time of enrolment. These transcripts will be verified and applied where relevant.

Skills Recognition, commonly referred to as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), is an assessment process that evaluates an individual’s formal, non-formal, and informal learning to determine the extent to which the individual has met the competency standards.

ENROL

All students must complete an enrolment. You will receive further information from Lexmar Training to begin your enrolment process.

As part of the enrolment, students maybe required to undertake a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) Skills Assessment. This assessment helps determine your suitability for the program and ensures that your current skill levels align with the unit requirements.

Submitting an enrolment does not guarantee a place in the program. Lexmar Training carefully reviews each application to ensure students are placed into units where they are most likely to succeed.

Additional information and documentation may be required to process applications, including:

  • Proof of identification (drivers’ licence, passport, photo ID card)
  • Unique Student identifier (USI)
